Whether urban or mountain dwelling, small living doesn’t have to mean sacrifice. With some custom design inspiration from one local family, we were able to discover big solutions for a tiny space!
The Challenge: Turn a 660 square foot Vail ski condo, into a functional and comfortable living space for an active family of four.
The family acquired their tiny abode just less than one year ago. A little cleaning, a couple of fresh coats of paint, and they were ready to hit the slopes on opening day!
However, this family quickly learned that their new mountainside lodging would serve as more than just a simple base camp. It would be a place for family dinners, games nights, hosting guests, and even office work on those mid-week powder…ahem, “sick” days.
The homeowner wanted every furniture piece added to the condo to be high-quality, but also serve a multi-functional purpose for years to come.
The Solution: We started with a counter height drop leaf table, made of cherry hardwoods and a stylish base design. When the table is not being used for games or meals, it will soon serve as a console piece just below their newly mounted television. Adding the drop-leaf function to their table allowed for more space in the main living area, and two stools will find a home underneath the table to further conserve their condensed space. By simply pulling the table slightly away from the wall and locking the two leaves into place, they will have 4-foot by 4-foot table ready to seat 4 to 6 people with plenty of elbow room.
Two additional matching stools will stay at the breakfast bar for quick access. Two more stools will serve as side tables, anchoring either end of the couch when not being used for seating.
Next, we updated their loft ladder to match the table. The homeowners found the existing ladder to be a bit dated. The original paint was starting to chip from years of use, the rungs were uncomfortable to stand on, and the spacing of each step made it difficult to climb up and down. By moving the rungs closer together and widening the foot placement area, we created a more comfortable and safe way for the kids to enter and exit their bunk. We think this will be a great place to dry out wet ski clothes too!
After spending some time in the condo with the homeowners, we discovered there are many more ways to maximise style, space and comfort. Be on the lookout for more surprises and solutions as we continue our Vail condo revamp!
